Naturally, this means that this company holds an edge when compared against its competitors.

For those who aren’t aware, this Japanese manufacturer is a very well known designer and creator of audio equipment including professional headphones and microphones. As a matter of fact, for the past 10 years, this company has been the provider of all microphones for the Grammy Awards. This shows us that when it comes to performance and quality, Audio Technica mean business.

This almost certainly means that if you wish to buy accessories created by this manufacturer then be prepared to pay a premium price. However, before you go for a specific product, you need to learn what makes these Technica headphones so special and what separates them from their competitors. You’ll also want to know if it’s worth buying their products regardless of whether you wish to use them professionally or for personal casual use.

Generally, most of these products are designed for professional use. However, as I’ve mentioned, there is ever-increasing popularity of these as every normal person wants to listen to their music and watch movies with perfect audio and sound quality.

Despite this, these cans are usually available based on a wide range of functions. In order to spend your hard-earned money wisely, you need to ensure that you buy depending on this function. In general, the high quality products made by this company warrant a high cost and they do. However, if you compare the best headphones made by Audio Technica with similar products from its competitors, you’ll quickly realize that there is a fine balance between the overall quality and cost. This means that accessories from this manufacturer are quite reasonably priced when you look at other big branded sets.

Let’s first think about the main function that you require. For example, are you going to be using your new headphones for music and movies? Or, are you an artist who requires a set of professional studio headphones. You may even be a DJ and are looking for the perfect product to suit your activities.

Along with determining the function, you might also need to be aware of the different styles that headphones are available in. For example, you may prefer to get earbuds over open or closed back styles. Additionally, you need to decide how much you’re willing to pay. This brand produces expensive products but this is much more reasonable when compared to competitors such as Sennheiser. And as I’ve mentioned, the quality is unrivaled.

Nowadays due to the competition, manufacturers are improving the quality of their products while reducing the price. This means that headphones made by Audio Technica are much more affordable now than ever before. Basically, even if you’re budget conscious and looking to buy this brand specifically then no need to worry, we’ll be able to find something for you. This is the reason that I will now review the best earphones created by this brand within several budget categories in order to find a model which can suit everyone.

However, before getting to this, I will be looking at and reviewing the best earbuds available for those who prefer this style. All of these products will also be put up against each other through a comparison table.

This is all done to ensure that you make the best decision possible.

Arguably the most notable product created by this company, the ATH-M50s have been top of the best sellers list for quite some time. Currently available for less than $150, this model is by far the best available within this price range. But what exactly makes it so incredible?

Well if we observe them initially, they look very durable – something that will accompany you through the years. Everything seems very well-built and heavy-duty. They look quite cool too and this means that I’d have absolutely no qualms about bringing them out with me. These M50s appear to be quite bulky but come in a collapsible design. This means that they fold down at the earcups to provide convenient portability and compact storage.

The comfort associated with this model is exceptional. The ear cups are made from soft material which simply defines luxury. In fact they’re so comfortable, that you might prefer to leave them on after you’re done listening to your music. The soft padded headband can be adjusted and this means that you can wear them for hours without experiencing any discomfort. They might clamp down on your ears initially but you will probably need a few days to burn them in.

In terms of the audio quality provided by these ATH-M50s, its worth knowing that they are designed for professional use and they certainly look and sound like a set that you’d find in a studio. Once the burn in period is over, you’ll notice that the audio and sound quality is absolutely awesome with an added crisp and naturally detailed soundstage. The driver technology incorporated into this product further enhances this audio quality and provides deep base with great accuracy. In addition to this, the circumaural design initiates a complete seal which allows an exceptional noise isolation feature.

It’s difficult to imagine but these perfect Technica headphones have a few negative points. If you were planning on using them with your smartphone to answer phone calls, then you may want to look elsewhere as these don’t come with a built-in microphone. Another issue I experienced was the non-detachable cable which can only cause convenience.

In overview though, I have been very impressed with this set and now I know why it is so popular amongst casual and professional listeners alike. I have absolutely no complaints regarding the appearance, comfort or audio quality. This means that for less than $150, you have a great opportunity to get the best in the business for a bargain.

The Audio-Technica ATH-ANC23 handily outperformed our expectations. Their sonic clarity, strength and agility put them on par with designer models that cost as much as $300 to $400. Throw some best-in-class active noise cancellation and a comfortable, secure fit into the mix and we say the ANC23 would be a value at $200. The fact that they come at a street price of about $80.00 is almost unfathomable, especially considering their stellar audio quality. It almost seems too good to be true, which is why, despite a couple of design quirks, the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC23 get my Editor’s Choice Award.

Performance

I listened to these directly out of an iphone.  The sound was truly impressive.  The first thing I noticed was that the sound of the ANC23 felt more outside the head than many IEMs.  One way in which I test to see how the sound envelops the head is to use a mono recording and take note of the shape and size of the overall sound.  I found the ANC23 to present sound in a rounded and in-front-of-you manner.  Listening to Duke Ellington’s “Take The ‘A’ Train”, I felt as though I was seated before the band rather than having the band play inside my head.
At its price-point, the ATH-ANC23 is the best sounding earphone I have yet to hear!  While I will further scrutinize the sound reproduction, my overall impression of the sound was that in terms of overall transparency and detail.  The tonal balance I found to be a touch on the warm side, but the bass showed to be fairly tight.  In some orchestral music I found the bass a little under-controlled, however the spatial presentation of these earphones still allowed for plenty of detail to make its way through.  I found the midrange to be fairly flat, but it did present some etch up in the upper spectrum of the midrange.  The highs feel extended if just slightly rolled off for a nice non-fatiguing experience.  I felt I was capable of listening for hours without breaking, using these!  I don’t like sibilance from my headphone (the harsh sound of the letter S) and I am very pleased with the fact that these earphones are some of the least sibilant which I’ve tried.  Listening to Eminem’s “My Name Is” I was impressed to hear the subtle percussion elements in the left channel be perfectly audible.  Guitars are rendered well.  Listening to “My Michelle” by Guns N’ Roses, it was very easy to focus on the left and right guitar tracks independently and differentiate them.  Perhaps a little of bit of details in the highs were just slightly lacking here, but the detail presented here is the best I have heard at this price-point.

RECOMMENDED FOR….
I recommend these for any commuter looking to have a quiet ride with their portable player while enjoying a variety of music.  I thought these were fantastic with most of the genres I threw at it (rock, pop, rap, reggae, jazz, electronic) For classical I thought these were good but I would recommend a earphone which was slightly flatter.

LAST WORD
The ANC23 is a very affordable and comfortable earphone with an excellent active noise cancellation feature and slightly warm tonal balance, perfect for the commute and long listening sessions.  These were perhaps the best earphones I have tried thus far for under $100!

Best under $100 – ATH-M30x

Audio-Technica ATH-M30x Professional Studio Monitor...
  • Advanced build quality and engineering
  • 40 millimeter drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum...
  • Tuned for enhanced detail, with excellent mid range definition
  • Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound...
  • Convenient single side cable exit

A pair available for less than $100, the M30x is a model which comes after the M50x and M40x in the M-series. The M40x doesn’t feature on our list as it is on the borderline of costing $100 and considering the charts topping M50s are a little bit more than this, it’d probably be worthwhile to give the M40x a miss.

Whether you want to listen to music, watch movies or use these Technica headphones for professional mixing or DJing, the M30x delivers at all levels. Just like the M50s and M50x, the M30x can also be folded down to provide great convenience in portability and storage. However, they do seem a little bit smaller compared to the folded M50s and this can be seen as either an advantage or a disadvantage.

They generally appear quite similar to the M50s so you know they’ll be quite attractive and professional looking when you’re out and about. However, being aware of the price difference, it is worth mentioning that the M50s seem more sturdy well-built when you handle them though this would be an expected feature.

Furthermore, the earcups on the M50s do swivel which can be an added plus point.

In terms of comfort, the ATH-M30xs do really well without any ear fatigue or head discomfort even if you wear them for an extended period of time to a certain extent. This is not to the level of some of the more expensive members of the M-series family. Therefore, you will probably feel a little bit of pressure on your ears if you keep them on for 5 or 6 straight hours. This will depend on your head and ear shape and size. However, this isn’t a standout issue associated with these Technica headphones.

Sound wise; this product is designed to a level expected from all products made by Audio Technica. It produces clean audio and sound with great detail which can not only rival but beat most other professional headphones that cost less than 100 bucks. It delivers all types of audio with great clarity and richness along with a solid bass. The adapter and plug included allow the M30x to be connected to your smartphones, laptops along with other audio equipment.

While the M50s have taken all the attention for reviewers and audio engineers alike, the low key ATH-M20x is the entry level model belonging to the famous M-series for professional use. Boasting an impressive level of sound isolation, these do leak some noise especially when you’re listening to music at the highest volumes.

Furthermore, due to the seal, your ears do feel a bit warmer after extended use. However, the overall audio quality is incredible for the price and you can even notice some of the sound signature belonging to the ATH-M50s.

They deliver every bit of quality you require from a pair of professional headphones in terms of sound clarity and bass.

So looking at comfort, what should we be expecting from a pair of wallet-friendly Audio Technica DJ headphones? Even if you weren’t expecting much, you’re in for quite a surprise. The entire M-series line promises outstanding comfort and the M20xs are no different.

The nice and soft padding ensures that you’ll be able to wear them for extended periods without causing any discomfort to your ears and your head. The low weight along with the adjustable headband further enhances this comfort. However the cord is quite long and considering the fact that you can’t detach it, this may be a form of great inconvenience for you.

The M20x is probably the best budget-friendly professional studio product available on the market in 2015. It’s not even a joke; these are certainly the best headphones available on the market for less than 50 bucks! This means that if you’re a casual listener, you’ll still be awed by the quality of the M20x.

Despite the price and the plastic material used for the design, you should have absolutely no worries regarding the durability as we all know about the famous build-quality provided by this manufacturer. This product will definitely be long-lasting regardless of how you use it.

My Final Thoughts

I’ve now looked at all the best products made by Audio Technica at different price ranges along with the best earbuds for those who prefer this style compared to full size Technica headphones. All 5 of these models have been compared through the use of a table so you can see how they differ and select the best product based on your requirements. The review for each model should also provide you more information which will hopefully help you to understand the reputation of this brand based on its top quality audio accessories. Before purchasing, you might even want to try the products before selecting the one that suits you best.

This brand truly does represent quality in every possible way and at a price where everyone can find something that suits them. I’m highly interested in full sized headphones and the ATH-M50s are a model I’m very fond of. I believe it exhibits everything you require from a pair of studio cans. While they’re decent in appearance, they still don’t catch the eye like I’d like them to. It’s great to see that the emergence of ATH-M50xBLs has incorporated that luxurious look into headphones and this further enhances the reputation of our brand of interest. So if you’re very much into your products looking awesome and eye-catching, I’d be really tempted to spend a little bit more for the latest model. If you think about this, even the ATH-M50xBLs cost less than $200 right now and that truly indicates a great price-performance ratio.

If you’re on a strict budget then you probably want to have a quick look at the ATH-M20xs. These entry level DJ headphones will not disappoint you in terms of quality and for just less than 50 bucks, these are a true bargain. Obviously don’t expect them to be as good as the M50s at any level but for almost 3 times cheaper, these are a top entry level model.

No matter what decision you make, rest assured, all of these models are the best Audio Technica headphones which will satisfy your music requirements for a very long time. These continue to carry on the legacy of this famous company.
