Packaging and Accessories

The first feeling you get when studying the Beyerdynamic T5p packaging is a sense of high quality.

That might sound odd, referring to a box, but Beyerdynamic understands that the first impression is important, and because of this, they’ve designed their packaging with quality in mind.

It’s simple, yet elegant.

The box has an openable front that lets you read more about the headphones and the Tesla technology. This, combined with the magnetic locks, makes for a fantastic first impression.

But enough about the packaging.

What does it include?

Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on your preference) there aren’t that many accessories included in the purchase of the Beyerdynamic T5p. However, it is possible to ‘add-on’ a bunch of optional accessories.

The following items are included in the original packaging:

  • The Beyerdynamic T5p headphones.
  • A two-sided, detachable 1.4m cable.
  • A 1/4″ plug-type adapter (6.35 mm).
  • And the hard carrying case.

An example of an optional accessory that can be purchased alongside the T5p is a longer cable.

The T5p are designed to be high-quality portable headphones. That’s why the cable included is on the shorter side. If you’re going to be using them with your PC, then maybe you’ll need the longer version (which is 3 meters).

Personally, I haven’t been troubled by the short length. I actually found it beneficial when using it on the go.

Also included is a plug adapter. This is convenient if you aren’t going to be listening to a source that has a standard jack.

The most attractive accessory is probably the hard carrying case. As the T5p are a pretty large pair of headphones, the carrying case is of course quite big.

But that’s not a problem, as you’ll only be using it when moving the headphones from place to place, or for storing them when not in use.

In fact, if you find yourself only using them occasionally, the case is a fantastic place to store them. It has soft edges and offers a great fit for the T5p.

Personally, I find myself wearing these headphones pretty much all day long, so my carrying case isn’t used all that much.

Build Quality and Design

The Beyerdynamic T5p has a sturdy design.

The headband, earcups, and the attachments are all very robust and intact. Every single time I take them off my head I notice exactly how good the build quality is.

I’m used to the earcups flopping around as I’m taking the headphones off. That doesn’t happen with the T5p. They remain in place.

The soft leather headband and earcups make the headphones very comfortable to wear, even though they’re on the heavier side.

They also smell very nice.

I realize that’s not something usually included in a review, but the Beyerdynamic T5p is just such a high-quality pair of headphones. Every single sense you get when using them is amazing.

They’ve got a closed-back design, and the amount of isolation is quite good. The amount of sound leakage is minuscule. You can hardly hear anything even when blasting high volumes (which I do not recommend, by the way).

A great feature is that the cable is detachable. It makes me less worried about accidentally breaking it and having to replace the headphones. I can just change the cable.

It attaches to both earcups, which you may or may not find annoying. I don’t find it annoying at all, but I know some people who do. It’s just something to keep in mind.

On the inside of the headband, over the left earcup, you’ll see an L (on the right hand side in the picture below) letting you know that this is the left earcup. There are also a couple of dots that you can feel in the dark if you can’t see the L.

Overall, the build quality of the Beyerdynamic T5p is absolutely fantastic.

As a huge plus, they’re also one of the most beautiful headphones I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing.

I’m usually not one to walk around in full-size headphones in public, but these headphones make it easy for me.

Comfort, Fit and Isolation

I’ve briefly touched upon how comfortable the T5p is.

I usually have trouble wearing headphones for extended periods of time. I experience fatigue rather quickly.

I’ve literally worn the T5p for hours upon hours without as much as noticing them.

They are also brilliant at discovering the structure of your head. I’m a stickler for settings and details, so I immediately sat down to find the appropriate height for me (by height, I mean how far the earcups extend from the headband).

There are a couple of dots located on the extended part of the headband that tell you how far the earcups are currently extended.

At first, I placed them on four dots.

After using them a while, I noticed that they’d become even more comfortable. I decided to take a look, and the headphones had adjusted so that the left earcup was extended three dots, and the right earcup was only extended one.

My head isn’t perfectly symmetrical, so it makes perfect sense to me that the earcups shouldn’t be extended exactly equal. Though, that the headphones could figure it out themselves that quickly surprised me.

The amount of isolation that they provide is also great. It isn’t too much so that you won’t hear anything at all, but it is enough so that you can focus on the music you’re listening to.

Sound Quality

I’m sure you’ve heard that open-backed headphones sound better than closed-back headphones.

The T5p busts that myth.

For a closed-back headphones, they’ve got a phenomenal sound!

The first thing you notice when plugging them in is the absurdly high level of clarity. I’ve quite literally heard sounds in some of my favorite tracks that I’ve never heard before.

The midrange, perhaps more so than the others, is exceptionally clear. They work absolutely fantastic with acoustic music.

Another feature I find astonishing is that the instrumental separation is as good as it is. I mean, after all, these are closed-back headphones. I can’t recall many closed-backs that have had such a good separation.

Usually, to get this level of quality and clarity, you’ll need high impedance headphones with a high-end amplifier.

It’s amazing that my phone can drive these bad boys.

To some, these headphones might be too bright. They favor the treble and high end ever so slightly. But the clarity and transparency more than add up for it.

The bass is fantastic. It depends quite a bit on the source, though. If you drive them through an amplifier, you’ll get a very deep and tight bass. If you just play them through, say, your iPod, then the bass won’t be as impressive (but it is still superb).

It is tough to find a pair of headphones that are as good as the T5p overall. They can play most genres of music very well.

If you’re one to listen to many different types of music, then the Beyerdynamic T5p might just be for you.

Value is perhaps the most important factor in a pair of headphones. You might have the best headphones in the world on your hands, but if they sell for ridicules sums, then they won’t be very attractive.

It’s no secret that the price of the Beyerdynamic T5p is quite steep.

But value is all about comparing the quality of the headphones to their price.

Fortunately, the quality of the T5p is through the roof. In my opinion, the price they’re asking for them is very reasonable. You get immense quality, and a pair of headphones that might last you a decade.

How Beyerdynamic T5p Compares

Let’s look at how the T5p compares to some other headphones from Beyerdynamic.

Beyerdynamic T5p vs T1

beyerdynamic T1 2nd Generation Audiophile Stereo Headphones with Dynamic Semi-Open Design (Silver)
  • Highly Efficient Tesla Technology Drivers
  • Spacious, Transparent and Powerful Sound
  • Breathable, Super Soft Velours Ear Cushions with Memory Foam
  • High impedance (600 Ohms), 5 Year Warranty
  • 3-Metre Long Double Sided, Detachable and Textile Braided Cable with OCC 7N Copper Conductors

The Beyerdynamic T5p and the T1 are very similar headphones overall. The difference is not as large as many people claim. The T1 is just slightly better than the T5p in most categories (sound quality etc.).

What you should be thinking about when comparing the two is portability.

If you need a word-class portable pair of headphones that can be driven without an amplifier, then go with the T5p. If you don’t need the headphones to be portable, and don’t mind driving them through an amp, then go with the T1.

Choose the T5p When

  • You need a portable pair of headphones
  • You don’t want to use an amplifier

Choose the T1 When

  • You only use your headphones at home
  • You don’t mind using an amplifier to drive them

Beyerdynamic T5p vs T70p

The T5p are a lot more comfortable than the T70p. Their size is somewhat similar, but the T5p is slightly bigger.

What about sound?

The T70p seems to be a lot more energetic, and genres such as rock have a slightly better punch. Nevertheless, the T5p has significantly more detail and clarity.

You could argue that the T70p are more fun to listen to for certain types of music. But overall, the T5p are the better headphones. They offer much better quality, sound stage, and clarity, which is to expected due to the price difference.

Choose the T5p When

  • You want a pair of headphones that work with all types of music
  • You want a lot of clarity and a wide soundstage
  • You want high-end headphones that will last for years

Choose the T70p When

  • You are looking for something cheaper than the T5p
  • You won’t be using the headphones for hours at a time
  • You will mostly be listening to rock music

Should I Buy the Beyerdynamic T5p?

There are two main things to consider before buying the Beyerdynamic T5p. The questions to ask yourself are:

  • Do I want quality, or do I want a cheaper option?
  • Do I want a portable pair of headphones?

As you can see, the first thing you should ask yourself before buying the Beyerdynamic T5p is whether or not you’re willing to pay for quality.

The T5p are an expensive pair of headphones, but they are top-notch and will most likely last you a decade (or even longer!). In my opinion, it is worth it to invest in a proper pair of headphones. You’ll get better sound, comfort, and won’t have to purchase a new pair for the foreseeable future.

If, however, you are looking for something cheaper, then the T70p might be a better choice.

The next question focuses on portability. Therefore, ask yourself: Do I need a portable pair of headphones?

If the answer is yes, then the T5p is a fantastic choice. If, however, the answer is no, then you might want to go with the Beyerdynamic T1. They will offer slightly better sound at the cost of portability and isolation.

Conclusion of Our Beyerdynamic T5p Review

If you’re looking for a high-end, portable pair of headphones, then look no further — the T5p is for you.
